Silver

On Christmas Day, I always wear my “heirloom” jewellery.

I have a lovely silver bangle that was given to me by my dad’s parents for my 21st. (That was a long time ago!) I remember opening the box – I was flatting in Mt Vic in Wellington at the time – and my flatmates were all watching. They were as excited as I was! I was so surprised to see such a beautiful piece. It’s very simple and elegant, and they had also had it engraved. It’s one of the few things I own that were given to me by nana and granddad.

My other grandmother gave me a beautiful gold and diamond ring. It was passed down from her grandmother to her, to me – because I am the eldest grand-daughter. It’s come a long way… originally, my grandmother lived on a farm in Holland, until she got married and emigrated to NZ after the war. I will keep the tradition going and pass the ring down to my own grand-daughter if I have one!

My grandparents are all gone now… but wearing the heirloom jewellery they gave me is a very special feeling of family and connection. It’s lovely to know my grandmother used to wear the same ring. I only wear these pieces on special occasions, as I would hate to lose them. They are my favourite things.”

Understanding Markings on your Gold and Silver Jewellery

If you own a piece of gold or silver jewellery, you have probably noticed that there are several markings stamped or etched on your piece. These marks are generally located on the inside of a ring or the underside or back of a pendant or bracelet. Gold chains may have a flattened piece of metal attached to the chain near the clasp which features the stamp, and some pendants may have a marking on the bail or loop supporting the pendant.

Because of their inconspicuous placement, these stamps will generally go unnoticed, however they do provide some information in regards to the value of your gold or silver jewellery. It is important to note though, that if you did not purchase your gold or silver jewellery from a reputable jeweller or dealer, the stamps on your jewellery may not be legitimate, so it’s best to get a valuation from a professional gold and jewellery valuer such as EzyCash Gold Buyers for more accurate information.

There are two main stamps or markings that you are likely to find on your gold or silver jewellery:

  • Metal quality: For gold, this mark indicates the carats, or gold quality, of the piece of jewellery. It may be shown using abbreviations such as 24ct or 18ct or expressed using a decimal figure which denotes the percentage of gold, for example .416 (10ct).
For silver, quality marks may be used on silver jewellery that contains a minimum of 92.5% pure silver, and this may feature a stamp showing, 925, 92.5 or .925
  • Trademark or maker’s stamp: The other mark is likely to be the trademark stamp, initials or logo of the manufacturer or jeweller who crafted the piece. This helps identify the origin, and often the age, of a piece of jewellery and therefore can assist with accurately appraising an item, particularly antique pieces.

Mining Gold and Silver isn’t an Easy Job

Prices for silver have reached record levels in the past year which is why it’s an excellent time to bring your silver into EzyCash Gold Buyers of Panmure, Auckland.  EzyCash Gold Buyers always pay top cash prices for silver jewellery, silver coins, silver bullion, broken silver and scrap silver.

In April last year the price of silver peaked at US$49 a troy ounce.  Currently the spot price of a troy kilo of silver is around NZ$1214 – an increase in the silver price of over 100% cent in the past five years.

This increase in the price of silver is due to a shrinking supply of silver around the world.  And this silver supply is set to shrink slightly further due to an announcement by the Mining Health and Safety Administration in the US.  The Administration has ordered the temporary closure of the silver shaft at the Lucky Friday silver mine in Mullan, Idaho.

The silver mine, owned by Hecla Mining Company, will be closed for maintenance and cleaning until early 2013.  Over time, sand and concrete material has built up in the silver mine and must be removed by power cleaning to prevent future hazards. Continue reading

The Topsy-Turvy Price of Gold

Gold is now trading at over US$1700 per troy ounce.

Silver has also mirrored the rise in the price of gold over the past decade.  2002 saw the price of silver hovering around US$5 per ounce.  Nowadays the price of silver is well over US$30 per troy ounce. Continue reading
